Thank you, Kimberly, for reaching out, to ensure accuracy.
Our responses are below. Please attribute them to an EPA spokesperson.
Fact Check: over 80,000 commercial chemicals are on the market 3,000 - 5,000 of those are considered high volume 700 new ones are introduced each year
Response: over 80,000 commercial chemicals are on the market
Right now, the Chemical Data Reporting (CDR) database provides our best estimate of chemicals "on the market." The Agency collects information on chemicals produced or imported in volumes of greater than 25,000 lbs through its Chemical Data Reporting (CDR) rule. Key information from the 2016 CDR effort, which is EPA's most recent CDR data, can be found at: https://www.epa.gov/chemical-data-reporting/2016-chemical-data-reporting-results
The ChemView database shows 8,703 entries for chemicals reported to the non-confidential version of the 2016 CDR. Using the non-confidential version of CDR, 4,750 unigue chemicals have a national aggregate production volume range of greater than 25,000 lbs and 2,829 chemicals have an aggregated national production volume reported in a range greater than 1M lbs. To access more information on CDR via ChemView, go to:https://java.epa.gov/chemview
Fact Check: 3,000 - 5,000 of those are considered high volume -
Response: In the past EPA has called production volumes greater than 1 million pounds per year high production volume. In 1998, EPA launched the High Production Volume (HPV) Challenge Program, a voluntary program intended to collect health and environmental effects data to provide the public with basic hazard information on 2,800 chemicals. The list of chemicals that were part of the program was based on the 1990 Inventory update.
Fact Check: 700 new ones are introduced each year

ED 002061 00028086-00001
Response: EPA reviews about 1,000 new chemical submissions (PMNs) per year. Over the history of TSCA, less than half of these chemicals enter the market each year. See our program stats page for pre- and post-Lautenberg Notice of Commencement (NOC) numbers, https://www.epa.gov/reviewing-new-chemicals-under-toxic-substances-control-acttsca/statistics-new-chemicals-review More information can be found at: https://www.epa.gov/reviewing-new-chemicals-under-toxicsubstances-control-act-tsca/statistics-new-chemicals-review

Hello Robert,
Thanks so much for your help confirming/correcting those commercial chemical statistics for our Parents magazine feature. I'm just checking in considering my deadline is today. If it's possible to get them today, I could wait as late as 4:00 or so. If today is not possible, I'll TK them in the draft I send my editor and tell her more time is needed to confirm them.

Subject: Question from Parents Magazine RE Commercial Chemical Stastitics
Hello Robert and Tricia (I'm not sure which of you is best suited to this question),
I'm a writer for Parents magazine, and I'm finishing a new print feature on helping parents understand and lessen exposures to environmental toxicants. I've spoken with 8 experts in children's environmental health across the country, and they keep mentioning the same trio of statistics that I can't seem to confirm. I'm hearing they came from the EPA, but I can't find an EPA webpage or resource to back them up. Are you able to confirm or correct the following?
over 80,000 commercial chemicals are on the market 3,000 - 5,000 of those are considered high volume 700 new ones are introduced each year
Sierra Club v. EPA 18cv3472 NDCA
Tier 13
ED 002061 00028086-00003
If you're able to help we'd be very grateful. My deadline is this Friday 7/21 in the morning Eastern time.
My sincere thanks for your time -
Kim
