This is to thank you again for your k indness in a g re e in g to m e e t w ith D r. Jen sen and m e la s t S aturday to d isc u ss our c o u n try 's r e s e a r c h n eeds in the a r e a of E n v iro n m en ta l H ealth. It w as m o s t in te re stin g and p ro fitab le to m e to be able to h e a r you and D r. Je n se n c o n sid e r the toxicology of le ad froim different vantage points. Don F o w ler's participation w as also very helpful, e sp ecially in re g a rd to p ra c tic a l co n sid e ra tio n s co n cern in g r e s e a r c h in the lead industry.
F ro m our d iscu ssio n , it would ap p ear that se v e ra l approaches a re needed:
1. B e tte r o b serv atio n ^ev alu atio n and re p o rtin g of e n v iro n m e n ta l and occu p atio n al h ealth d ata on p o pulations w hose a b so rp tio n of lead h as b een quantitated over a long p erio d of tim e, using epidem iological techniques to identify and m e a su re any insidious effects on health or to docum ent th e ir absence.
2. P ro d u ct o rien ted stu d ies of the tre n d s in en v iro n m en tal h ealth and contam ination. The organic lead p ro d u cers of anti-knock com pounds over the p a s t 40 y e a r s h av e p io n e e re d in th is a r e a and se t an ex am p le of w hat is possible through cooperative efforts between private industry and governm ent. O ther exam ples m ay also be cited of su ccessfu l p ro g ra m s in the chem ical ind u stry . The m o st im p o rtan t b a r r ie r s to p ro g re s s , m ay be overcom e through im proved application of existing know ledge, and our chief need is for im proved leadership ra th e r than additional data.
3. C hanges in body sy stem s induced by chem ical exposure axe being studied in a num ber of univ ersity and p riv ate la b o ra to rie s. A n overall evalu ation should be m ad e of w hat is being done, in an e ffo rt to in s u re sy ste m a tic coverage of the m o st im portant facets of re s e a rc h , and to help avoid "gaps" w hich a re a lm o st certain to occur o th erw ise. A s m entioned by D r. Jen sen , benefits to be gained include a b e tte r understanding of b asic hum an physiology and genekrophic v a ria tio n s , a s in the c a se of m a tu ra tio n of h em o g lo b in in the p re se n c e of elevated lead lev els in the body.
