McGinty SHAC TO W. G. Juhl L. McCune R. T. Hammann Research II was inspected on April 11 and received an overall rating of satisfactory. The laboratory areas were overall better than ever which made selection of the best area difficult. Research I was judged best with the Quality Assurance Laboratory excellent and a close second. Research II and Research III were satisfactory. Research II looked very good except for the ex-ARMS areas and catalyst development areas. Technicians in the two AN bench unit areas showed the greatest knowledge of safety in the whole lab area. Personal Knowledge of Safety No deviation from accepted good practices were observed except in the Industrial Hygiene area. Industrial Hygiene personnel have not had routine safety meetings since the reorganization and do not follow plant procedures with half face respirators. Personnel associated with the AN-PSBU and AN Lab Reactor Section were well trained on use of safety equipment. The safety log book is labeled as the janitor's safety log book. Use of Personal Safety Equipment No deviation from accepted good practices were observed. Condition of Safety Equipment A big red light on the AN-PSBU wall could not be identified by the technician in the area. j LAM001783 SC 000585 W. G. Car seals on equipment room hot water heater relief valve block valves were improperly installed and not routinely inspected (Procedure P-0123).' Hot water heater relief valve next to Roland Libers office is not identified as ever being inspected. Air tank in equipment room shows no evidence of ever being inspected. A phone sticker was missing on the phone in Lab 22k2. Research II did a good job of inspecting emergency lights. Safety Hazards Hood in AN-PSBU was left open wider than permitted. Chemicals stored in office areas (Labs 2116 and 2232). Ladder inspection out of date (2lA6). Excess samples and reagents (acids and flammable chemicals) sitting out and around in open areas in Labs 2228 and 2231. Housekeeping Melt Crystalize Control Room Clutter and glassware laying out and around on benches and tables. Catalyst Prep Area Floor and area cluttered. Lab 1 Unsafe to walk through. Messy and junky. Full and empty water containers are stored in the hall outside Lab 1 and Lab 2. Partially full and empty containers outside building (outside Lab l) just laying around. AN Courtyard Refrigerator This is stuffed full of samples. The number of the samples is excessive. Roland Libers and Mickey Rooks offices very cluttered. Lab 2113 cluttered.
