Shelbie Cook Goodyear Tire Company Logan, Ohio Dear Ms. Spencer: An occupational disease investigation was conducted at the Goodyear Tire Company Facility, Logan, Ohio on August 31, 1982 by the writer. The claimant, Ms. Shelbie Cook, has alleged that her employment at said company has induced her symptoms of burning, itching, and blistering of both eyes. The claimant initiated her employment with Goodyear on August 1*, 1968. Ms. Cook worked as a skin former primarily during the tine period of March 8 - June 1, 1982. Prior to March 8, 1982, Ms. Cook was utilized as a general shop helper and not normally as a skin forming specialist. Skin forming involves the molding of laminated vinyl parts to the shape of automobiles (i.e. dash boards). The vinyl stock is laminated at another location within the pla1t. The pieces are then '.->ated to a temperatu-.e between 330 - 450 degrees Fahrenheit, which facilitates the molding process. Possible contaminant vapors or gases at the oven exit/skin forming area are benzene, chlorotoluene, xylene, and cyclohexanone. Recent company air sampling results for these compounds indicated exposure levels of less than 0.05 parts per million - which is well-below all pertinent standards or recommendations. Both company and union industrial hygienists agree that a chemical irritating to the eyes is occasionally emitted during skin forming. However, multiple air sampling studies have not identified a specific etiologic agent. Company records indicate that the claimant has visited the facility's clinic for treatment of eye irritation on several occasions. OD #19309-22 Shelbie Cook Goodyear Tire Company Logan, Ohio Page Two Medical clarification should determine if the claimant's irritation is indeed an occupational disease. Dr. Cruz's diagnosis within the file indicates that Ms. Cook's condition on May 7, 19S2 was blurry vision, burning, and itching of the eyes.
