`This is the first updateofthe retrospective cohort mortality study by University of Minnesota epidemiologists. The original study was completed in 1980 (see study #2).
`The study population was defined as all hourly employees who were employed at least six months in the Chemolite (Cottage Grove) plant and, in particular, the Chemical Division. The roster of employees from the initial Chemolite study was updated to include new employees hired since the first study was completed. The study updated the vital statusof employees through 1983. There were no statistically significant findings. `There were three prostate cancer deaths observed versus one expected among Chemical Division employees. A nested case-control study was conductedof the prostate cancer
deaths at the Chemolite site. For each case, four matched controls were selected.
Individual job histories were reviewed to determineifany job titles or department codes occurred more frequently among cases than controls. There were no significant
differences in department codesorjob titles between cases and controls. The authors concluded that the greater number ofobserved prostate cancer deaths may be due to the higher prevalenceofprostate cancer in Minnesota than the U.S. and/or a chancefinding
due to the large numberof comparisons that were conducted.
