PHILLIPS ROCKDALE OPERATIONS RE: P-100 INSERT BUS INSULATOR REMOVAL A team of people met on Thursday, November 1, 1990 to discuss personal hygiene concerns when removing the asbestos bearing bus spacer insulators from P-100 pots. In attendance were Jim Richter, Frank Burford, Kevin Rolan, Jim Saxton, J. D. Hawkins, Clifford Hodrick, and the writer. The basic content of the meeting had to do with "How can Potlining employees safely remove and dispose of the referenced insulators without exposing themselves or Potroom employees to air born asbestos fibers?" It is worthy to note here that the insulators are not friable and testing to date has not indicated any significant generation of asbestos fibers. Regardless, the team worked on a plan to address the concerns of the plant personnel involved in the operation. It was decided to have Kevin Rolan set up a meeting with someone knowledgeable in the handling of asbestos materials and capable of training workers to handle these materials. Kevin will contact an asbestos knowledgeable person and set up a site visit to the P-100 lines so that this person can review our situation and offer advice on methods recommended for removing the insulators. This person will work with the potlining crew on several jobs to make sure that the employees are properly protected. The crew performing the work will also be trained by the asbestos expert so that they will be competent when performing this task.
