(216) 781-2400 VINYL INSTITUTE RECOGNIZES SAFETY, ENVIRONMENTAL ACHIEVEMENT WAYNE, New Jersey, June 26, 1991 -- Fifteen vinyl manufacturing plants located throughout the country have been recognized for outstanding contributions to the safe production of PVC (polyvinyl chloride, or vinyl). The awards are presented each year by the Vinyl Institute, the national trade association representing the leading manufacturers of vinyl, vinyl feedstocks, additives, and Sim and sheet products. Separate awards are given in the areas of environmental protection and worker safety. This year's awards recognize performance during 1990. The Institute's environmental achievement award is designed to measure a plant's ability to control and minimize vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) emissions and is modeled on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's National Emission Standard for Hazardous Air Pollutants. VCM is a feedstock used to manufacture PVC, the world's second largest selling plastic material.
