MARINITE CAUTION LABELS INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTS
As you are well aware, Hopeman Brothers have refused to accept Marinite bearing the caution labels. Because of this, w<? have stopped "Caution" labeling all Marine products and are going to an ink .stamping ,of the caution message.
In light of Hopeman1s refusal to accept labels, we requested Billerica to inspect stock having labels and located at the bottom of several tiers of pallets',
Billerica's investigation yielded the following wire: "Went thru load
o f .3/4" 10 ft, Mte 36, Mat'l, on bottom pallet, had been in inventory
since 9/29, Hazardous labels were removable without tearing label.
Surface of panels was relatively dust-free, also surface hard. Pandux
exceeded 55 units also removed labels from Mte. 65. Also removable in
one piece,

Based upon the fact that labels could be removed intact from sheets labelled for almost 3 months and located under several tiered pallets wjL.

HAZARDOUS WARNING LABELS
Bue to a recent Hopeman Bros, complaint the method of applying a Health Hazard Warning to Billerica products has been reviewed with resultant changes
We would like to state the Plant's problems and increased costs associated with the current system of marking products.
The original one label per sheet hazardous warning ma-rk-ing had the effect of reducing available inspection time. To secure a label, remove its backing and apply it to a sheet accounted for approximately 25* of total available inspection time. The actual cost of the label itself, approximately $2500 per year.
Due to a recent increase in Molten Metal Marinite complaints we have taken a closer look at our inspection operation. One obvious observation is that far too much time is taken up with labeling and stamping. It is possible for a Marinite product to require the following markings; product stamp, date code stamp, Underwriters, U.s.c.O., and hazardous warning labels. Total estimated time is 21 seconds out of a total 20-30 second available inspection time. The Hazardous Warning label is only an added marking to an already time consuming operation* We estimate that the application of the label P? industrial Marinites will increase inspection labor costs by $5,000. This added expense accounts for reinspeetion and marking of sheets not completely inspected, labeled or stamped in the allotted on line inspection period.
The application of a health hazard label to the surface of Marine Marinite products has been curtailed* Instead, each sheet vill be stamped at the mid-point of each end, not to exceed k in. in from the edge. Our regular inspector will not have the time for stamping each sheet. We estimate an increase in inspection labor costs of $2500 per year for applying the hazardous warning to Marine products. The total

added cost of applying a health hazard v a m i n g is estimated at $10,000 per year. We understand its application is a legal require ment and must he applied to each sheet. We vish to point out that although it is required, the Plant is faced vith increased costs and application problems. Wouldn't it be possible to apply some sort of marking to each Marinite package? Thermobestos is not individually marked. Neither are cigarettes, or any other product which immediately comes to mind. All are marked on the package, not the product.
