SUBJECT Evaluation of Competitive PVC Resin Produced by Borden Chemical Company We have evaluated a sample of Borden PVC resin (unknown nomenclature) obtained on a June 13, 1975 customer service call to Uvalde Rock and Asphalt Company in Houston, Texas. Data on Borden resin, along with typical data for VSJE-10, the nearest UCC com positional and molecular weight counterpart are shown in the attached table. The inherent viscosity, PVC content, bulk density and contamination (syntron count) values on the Borden resin are within VSJE-10 specifications. Median particle size and particle size distribution are also very similar to values obtained on VSJE-10. The 17.1 yellow factor, however, is significantly higher than DCC specifications and it would be a totally unacceptable color rating for VSJE-10. The Borden resin contain^! 214 ppm of VCMjhi.ch- is in the lower range of typical values for VSJE-lu. -This low level of monomer may be due to resin storage conditions but the high yellow factor indicates that Borden probably exposed this resin to an excessive and/or prolonged amount of heat during the manufacturing process. In conclusion the Borden resin does not appear to have any property advantages over VSJE-10 and we would expect the high color level to be a real product deficiency.
