Wet methods were used during the removal, and no visible dust was noted. Employees wore the required protective equipment. Clean up of the removal was thorough and effective. ' '' - Please call if you have any questions. Certified Industrial Hygienist LAM 019536 ABS-000347 OOOH[7 . INTRODUCTION IMCO was engaged in the removal of insulation from the #3 Turbine in the UCC Generator Room. This removal was monitored as part of IMCO's ongoing as bestos control program. Additionally, the removal was done without totally isolating the turbine in a temporary housing. BACKGGROUND The area around #3 Turbine was isolated by placing warning tape around the turbine. Warning tape was also used in the lower level to limit access to the removal area. Asbestos.warning signs, were placed at all major entrances to the upper and lower removal areas. Plactic was used to cover electrical parts so limited amounts of water could be used during the removal. Water was initially applied from a garden-tvpe spray can. Because of the thickness of the block material to be removed, a water hose was later used. However, the amount of water used was carefully restricted so exposed electrical parts (armature) would not be damaged. The block insulation was wetted down while in place, and additional water was applied before the material was placed in plastic bags. Employees wore the required protective clothing and respiratory protection. Good discipline was exercised in the wearing of protective equip ment despite the heat build up in the closed building. MONITORING A total of five air samples were obtained during the removal. The samples were collected and analyzed in accordance with the OSHA Asbestos Standard (1910.1001). LAM 019537 ABS-000348 Personal air samples were taken on two employees, however, one employee left the job site at noon to attend co personal business. This sample is not representative of this employee's eight hour exposure, and is included only be cause it does represent a peak exposure level of'1.7 fibers/cubic centimeter (f/cc). The eight-hour exposure levels of the employees working on this re moval project are better represented by the second employee's morning and after noon exposure of 0.1 f/cc. The three area samples from around the perimeter of the controlled area were 0.006, 0.008 and 0.023 f/cc. Monitoring results are contained in the attached table. CONCLUSIONS Personal exposures were well below the OSHA PEL of 2.0 f/cc. Although peak exposure approached this level, fiber release was generally confined to the controlled area.
