KAROLY U)^K February 11, 1981 ASBESTOS CONTROL MEETING AT CHAMBERS WORKS A slide presentation was given at Chambers Works on January 28, 1981, by Jim Otter of Asbestos Control Tech and Anthony Natale of Duall Maintenance Company. They are in the business of removing asbestos insulation from inside buildings. It is their opinion that encapsulation of existing asbestos insulation is not effective. There is a failure rate of about 80% and occurs anywhere from six months to three years. The C03t difference between removal and encapsulation is approximately 10%. They isolate a designated area with polyethylene and maintain it under negative pressure using "micro trap" portable exhaust systems, which they also manufacture. Each exhaust system contains a HEPA filter and moves air at a rate of 1700 CFM. During removal, monitoring for fibers takes place both inside and outside the controlled area with GCA fiber monitors and sampling pumps (depending upon conditions). The workers wear respirators, goggles, and tyvek clothing. They seem to have a well-developed procedure for removing asbestos insulation while controlling airborne fibers in the non-isolated areas to acceptable levels. WJK/dar DUP 0906195 SC-DP-06770
