Attached are the results of asbestos monitoring for three days at the Cellosize Unit (Bldgs. 79 and 77) after the contamination of asbestos caused by a Heist blasting operation in the area south of building 77. All samples are well below the action level of 0.1 fiber/cc except the maintenance lunchroom area sample of building 77, collected on July 30, 1987. This sample was suspected of being "contaminated" as no other samples showed high levels of asbestos. In addition, two samples of dust collected off the air conditioner ledge and filter (approx. 3 feet from where the air sample was taken) were reported as nil for asbestos content as reported to this writer by the Institute Plant maintenance coordinator. The air conditioner was operating all day.
The personal exposure samples were below the 0.2 fiber/cc permissible exposure level standard per 0SHA 29CFR 1926.58 and the action level of 0.1 fiber/cc as per the same standard.
Employees wore no street clothes, two pair of coveralls, headcover, boots, gloves and an AO R57-A HEPA half-face cartridge respirator. They showered before lunch and at the end of the workday before leaving plant.
