Nordstrom, General Manager Pabco Industrial Products Division Fibreboard Corporation 1710 - 59th Street Emeryville, California 94623 Dear Mr. Nordstrom: In response to your meeting with Mr. Balzer, we are submitting a proposal for a grant from the Fibreboard Corporation to be used in research on the Filtration of Airborne Fibrous Dusts. Since 1965, Drs. Tabershaw and Cooper and Mr. Balzer have been Involved in a study of asbestos-containing products . and their effects on occupationally exposed populations. In addition, Mr. Balzer has pursued a study of the aerodynamic behavior of fibrous materials during cyclonic or gravitational separation with special emphasis on asbestos. From this work have come the direction and data for this proposal. I The effectiveness of existing fiber collection systems, baghouses, cyclone..*, etc., have not been evaluated in terms of the contribution of submicroscopic fibers to the community air around a manufacturing plant using asbestos or other mineral fibers. The emphasis of this proposal is the testing and evaluation of filter materials used in dust control systems and in respiratory protective devices used by personnel working with asbestos-containing materials. Evaluation of the filtering efficiency of these materials along with theoretical definition of the aerodynamic behavior of the fibers can result in more efficient collection systems for fibrous materials. The protection of the community air and workers will be the goal of this study with the by-product being a probable savings in materials. Relationship with the personnel of the Pabco Industrial Products Division over the past several years has been most helpful in our projects involving the manufacturing and use of insulation materials. Mr. Hoope's and your assistance have been most appreciated. We look forward to a more formal relationship in the future. Mr. F. A. Negotiation regarding the final budget will be between this office and you, while arrangements for payment and other legal considerations are with the University's grant office. Payment periods can be quarterly or semi-annually. The proposed grant is for a three-year period. A report will be Issued at the end of the grant, with appropriate annual progress reports. The University will be free to publish the results and/or description of the work carried out under this grant, guaranteeing that 1) sponsorship of grant shall be cited, 2) Fibreboard Corporation products studied shall not be identified'in any publication unless written permission of said Corporation is obtained, and 3) . copies of all such publications shall be provided the Fibreboard Corporation.
