On motion, duly seconded and carried, the minutes of the previous Meeting, November 19, 19^0, were approved as presented. Mr. Sager reported on the ASTM F23.80 Protective Clothing Materials for Exposure to Molten Substances Committee. He reported that a task group from the committee would get together for the purpose of writing a working document. It is hoped that such a document might expedite progress on a completed Standard. Mr. Casey and Mr. Thomas reported on foreign competition. Currently 70fr of work gloves are imported, mostly from Hong Kong, Taiwan and Korea. China, with a wage rate of $00.10 per hour compared to Taiwan at $00.65 per hour is a major threat to these three for the U-S. market. Coated gloves are of increasing concern as the duty is being reduced gradually from 3% to l4f0 by 1987. Current duty is 27.6$.. Mr. John Weaver reported op.-the NFPA fireman's clothing committee. Spec ifications for clothing 1971, were reaffirmed for another three years. Efforts are still underway to allow competitive fabrics such as fire resistant cotton to qualify. A passive alert device was discussed.and hopefully DKS 177 a specification will be available in the spring. Mr. Schmidt introduced a discussion on a report done by a student on asbestos work gloves. It was generally decided that the report lacked a great deal of Important information such as: grade of asbestos, linings, realistic work applications. It was also suggested that a glove be submitted to SEE for approval. Ibis suggestion was considered impractical at the present time. Ms. Bedell reported on ASTM F23.^0 Clothing Classification Matrix. The Matrix was issued in the form of a proposed ballot in June. It was reported that 120 ballots were sent out, 6k were returned with 2 against and 6k in favor, many with comments. The proposed Matrix would require a data bank" which ASTM has declined to maintain. Mr. Schmidt introduced a request on behalf of the American Pulpwood Association for members of the ISEA product group to produce and market leg protective devices for operators of power chain saws in accordance with their new voluntary standard. Difficulties in marketing, distribution and liability were cited by members. Mr. Wilcher reported on SEE and stated that industry has expressed special interest in clothing certifications. Mr. Wilcher further noted that chemical clothing seems to be of most concern to the industry. Mr. Wilcher also reported that he would volunteer a panel of speakers from ISEA to cover various topics on chemical protective clothing for AJHA. At his time AIHA has not responded.
