Stabile METHOD: Membrane Filter Technique Using Phase Contrast Microscopy (38C-29X4-R1) DISCUSSION: Maintenance contract personnel were in the process of making insulation matts. The matt consisted of a fiberglass body approximately 12' x 3' covered with a 707, asbestos containing material. The insulators frequently beat the matt in order to shape it. Two men were working in the area and or.e was checked for ambient air in his breathing zone and the other's breathing air was checked. (This was done by insertion of a closed system tube into the respirator.) a 36" fan was directed on the working area which is approximately 5' to 10' from a garage door opening. Good circulation and ventilation seemed apparent. RESULTS: Out of 20 observed fields, an average count of 4.6 fibers greater than 5 ja in length were detected in the ambient air working area and the average count of fiberglass ranging from 72 ,u to 390 u was .25. The asbestos concentration was calculated at 3.96 fibers/ml / 5 u and the fiberglass count was 2.2 x 1C~^ fibers/ml ,> 5 .u. The breathing air sample showed no fiberglass and no asbestos fibers in the 20 observed fields. CONCLUSION: The sampling indicates that the levels of asbestos fibers are below the OSKA limits of 5 fibers/ml v 5 u. It also indicates that the proper wearing of mechanical respirators virtually eliminates the possibility of breathing in asbestos fibers. It is the belief of the author that significant preventative precautions are being taken in this case. COMMENTS: The working area air is very well circulated by the 36" fan; however, in the wintertime the fan is probably off and the doors are probably closed.
