The acute toxic effect of CS-2151 on microorganisms was measured by adding the test compound to fresh activated sludge mixer liquor and monitoring the rate of oxygen depletion in the mixture. Prior to CS-2151 addition, the activated sludge was brought to near oxygen saturation by air sparging. At 1,000 rag/1 CS-2151 had no effect on the respiration rate of the microorganisms in the test system. Introduction
This report describes tests performed on CS-2151 to evaluate its acute toxicity to activated sludge mixed liquor. The report provides a graph of the data generated in the study. (Figure 1)
Methods and Materials
Environmental Laboratory received the test sample on 11/4/80. The sample was a light, yellow liquid. It was reported to contain 25% solids in water. W. A. Scheil performed this work in accordance with the standard Environmental Laboratory protocol (attached).
Results and Discussion
The results of the study are shown in Figure 1. The results show that CS-2151 had no retarding or stimulatory effect on the oxygen depletion rate. This suggests that CS-2151 is not likely to have an acute adverse effect on wastewater treatment systems. Based on the low usage level of this material.
This product is used at a concentration of 1,400 ppm (350 ppm on a solids basis). The chemical is wasted from plating baths primarily is drag-out with parts that are subsequently rinsed. CS-2151 wastes that are sewered from usage would be greatly diluted below this 1,400 ppm level and the wastes would be still further diluted in the wastewater treament system. Thus, we expect the CS-2151 concentration in a wastewater treatment system would normally be 2 or more orders of magnitude lower than the 1,000 ppm concentration found to have no acute inhibitory effect in this laboratory test. These results suggest that no significant, adverse effect on activated sudge viability is likely.
