ETHYL CORPORATION OP CANADA LIMITED Memorandum of Meeting with Department of Health and Social Services Fredericton Hew Brunswick Subject: HIGHER TETRAETHYL LEAD CONTENT IN MOTOR FUEL The meeting was held In Fredericton at 4:00 P.M. on Tuesday, January 26, i960. Present were Dr. J.A. Melanson, Chief Medical Officer and Registrar General, Mr. A.E. Wilby, Assistant Registrar General, Mr. Alwyn J. Cameron, Director, Sanitary Engineering Division, Mr. H.J. Phi Ip and Dr. D.R. Warren. Dr. Melanson has a well organised health service which has been x^ell established in this province for many years. He was most affable and made the visit easy; Mr. Phllp presented the economic justification for Increasing the permissible limit of tetraethyl lead to 4 mis. per U.S. gallon. Some discussion of the Irving Refinery under construction at St. John followed. There was no concern expressed regarding the industrial hygiene problems of the refining operation or the addition of tetraethyl lead to motor fuel. Mr. A.J. Cameron, the Director of Sanitary Engineering and a most interested man, enquired about drainage from service stations. This is presenting a problem in the province as the drinking water supply is in some Instances being contaminated with hydrocarbons. He was aware, of course, that the problem here was not the toxicology of lead. Industrial hygiene in general and specifically that of tetraethyl lead v/as discussed and it was felt that the three members of the Department were completely satisfied with our program of health supervision. This meeting was a very pleasant experience. The men remained some time after the normal closing hour and took the trouble to show us some of the historical data of the health department, which incidentally had the first ^Lnister of Health in the British Empire, appointed in 1918.
