The joint meeting of the Ad Hoc ILZRO/LIA Subcommittee on the EPA/CDC Smelter Study and the American Mining Congress Nonferrous Smelter Subcommittee was convened at 10:00 a.m., on Friday, March 26, 1976, at the ILZRO Offices in New York. Phelps Dodge New Jersey Zinc Kennecott American Mining Congress St. Joe Minerals Corporation Anaconda The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the data that have been received from EPA for the EPA/CDC Smelter Study. The data include computerized print outs of FEP, lead in urine (PbU), blood (PbB), hair (PbH), and dust (PbD), CONFIDENTIAL DR 3403011 2- - cadmium in hair, blood, and dust, zinc and copper in blood and dust, and arsenic in hair, dust, and urine. It was indicated that EPA is still in the process of transferring the data on residence to magnetic computer tape; when this has been completed, print-outs of these data will be pro vided. Dr. Lynam circularized copies of the calculations ILZRO/LIA staff have done on the lead and cadmium data. Thus far, only means, standard deviations, and ranges were determined for FEP, CdB, CdH, and PbB, as well as the dis tributions of PbB for each smelter or control population individually. No statistical comparisons were made between control and 'smelter populations. Mr. Nelson also circularized a summary of calculations performed on the data by ASARCO, including arsenic. It was felt that, in general, the results were quite favorable and unalarm ing. It was then decided that Mr. Nelson should contact Dr. Carl Hayes, the EPA representative for the study, regarding a meeting of EPA, CDC, state health department officials, and industry representatives to discuss presentation of the data. Mr. Denham volunteered to prepare a draft statement that would represent the Subcommittees' comments on the study and data. The meeting was adjourned at 12:30 p.m. Lillian G.
