Please see the attached letter from Gerry Morgan of North American Asbestos. Also the 2-24-71 Memo from Bill Brenner from which it appears that we shall be using - in the Cleveland plant alone - around 1200 tons this year.
I called Gerry Morgan today to advise him of our increased consumption of Amosite Asbestos, and learned that he is leaving for England tomorrow. The purpose appears to be to make a pitch for increased shipments to the U.S.A., and he tells me that the mines are oversold for this year.
In view of this, I am sure that you will want to review the situation regarding grade S44, as described in Miles Macnair's
er_of__0ctober 7. Despite the unfavorable Lab report___ (M-4924) it was recently necessary for us to take a truckload?
this material in order to keep the plant going.
In view of Bill Brenner's forecast^qf approximately 1200 tons for the Cleveland plant alone (IriaaSsaaP your projection of 800 tons for Cleveland and Chicago combined) it will no doubt be necessary for us to use every grade we can, and for that reason I am sure that you will want to see whether official approval can now be given to the S44 grade, although I understand from Gerry Morgan that this will not be available until around September.

Mr. Franks. Bilton, Director of Purchases Foseco, Inc. P. O. Box 8728 Cleveland, Ohio 44135
Dear Frank,
This is in reply to your letter of February 18, pertaining to the availability of Grade S44 Amosite.
We have been tentatively advised of the possibility of S44 becoming available during the last half of 1971. Regretfully, however, it will be in rather short supply and should it be made available to us it would appear, at this point, that this grade would perhaps be a substitute for Grade S33/65. In other words it would be used to reduce the pressure on the S33 group rather than for new market development.
At the moment the port price for S44 is $205 per metric ton, f. o. b. vessel as opposed to $227 for S33/65.
As previously advised I expect to be in London in early March to further explore the availability of Amosite. We shall continue to keep you advised to the best of our ability.
Best personal regards.
Sincerely yours,
NORTH AMERICAN ASBESTOS CORPORATION

Our Asbestos consumption this year is averaging 188m lbs. per month verses the 1969 average of 123M lbs. per month. This unexpected increased in consumption has caused a serious reduction in our inventory and is the reason we have failed to stock-pile 25 tons on the patio. I intend to immediately increase my ordering levels to anticipate continued usage at a 190M per month rate. This means that
:rease as fol1ows:
Old Requirements
Min 75M lbs. Max 1 20M lbs.
New Requirements
Min 95m lbs. Max 150M lbs.
This is exclusive of the 50M lb. patio supply.

Dior Ted,
The prioe of Amoalte Asbestos ex Cepe Asbestos Limited Kill be
going up in 1971 by about 5% on F.O.B. prices ex South Africa. This is
bound to be reflected In jour purchasing prioes from North American Asbeston for 3.55/65.
Ttaey are now introducing a new grade, S^A^jphich has asligbj^. shorter fibr^lgig^i but which is otherwise iaSntieal, and whfBHHKTT^^ nlVe kn rJTJTSvlPioe per short tan of 98.0 RAND (cf new prioe of 3.35/65 108.9 RAND). If this grade ie suitable for your production, there should be a significant prioe saving. We know that this grade is currently also being offered to Perro Engineering and IMP.
We have arranged with Cape Asbestos to send you 1 ton of S.44 Free of Charge, adtressed for your attention. I feel it is very much in your interest to evaluate this in Profax 31 and Proflax, baing the largest user of Asbestos in the group, though I am naturally very interested in receiving the results of any investigations you carry out for transmission to other companies in the group.
I will send you the technical data aheeta whan I gat them - we will also be doing same comparative testa ourselvea on a laboratory aeala, text 1 feel theae results will be of less relevanoe than a production assessment of the sort you can undertake.
Looking forward to seeing you at the end of the month.
With beat wishes.
