K ehoe then started to review h is background in this a rea . He em p h asized that w hile th ere w ere d efin ite d iffe r e n c e s am ong the, s e v e r a l m e th y l-e th y l a lk y ls in so fa r as absolute to x icity is con cerned, he fe e ls that th ese d ifferen ces a re sm a ll r e la tiv e to the p ro b lem s im p o sed by the d iffe r e n c e s in v o la tility of the com pounds. V o la tility is im portant in that it a ffects the exp osu re le v e l of in d ivid u als, and hence the rate of accu m u lation of P b . He stated that 75 m icro g ra m s Pb p er cubic m eter is the m axim um to w hich a m an should be exp osed on a continuous b a s is , and is the m axim um in our p lan ts, He em p h asized that organ ic and in organ ic lead w ere quite d ifferen t in their e ffe c ts . John C ooley ` pointed out that they could not ju stify a la r g e -sc a le exp erim en tal program if fa cto rs now known would prohibit the u se of m ore v o la tile lead com pounds. He w anted to know w hether a long to x ic ity study w ould be req u ired , after exp osu re le v e l w as d eterm in ed , b efo re a m ore v o la tile com pound could be u sed c o m m erc ia lly . le v e l. M r. R ogers pointed out that th eir B a k ersfield refin e ry would be
the b e st p lace to do.the job. H ow ever, p rem iu m g a so lin e alone would
require the Pb equivalent of 216, 000# TEL for a 3-m onth test period.

to study lead le v e ls w ith TEL at C a lifo rn ia 's refin e ry loading ra ck s.
