In general, it has two basic areas of application in sound control--as a barrier used to block sound paths, and as a damping material for structures and surfaces to reduce transmission of vibration and radiation of airborne sound. Within each of these areas, there are many variations and specialized uses of lead and mixtures of lead and other materials. Perhaps the primary reasons for its continuing popularity is its extreme versatility and simplicity -- even for the uninitiated. It can be cut with a common scissors, molded and shaped to any contour, and is unaffected by solvents, coolants, cutting oils and other materials used in industry. It can readily be laminated to other materials such as wood and steel, and is often mixed with other materials such as epoxy and plastic to produce an effec tive tound absorbent with a broad range of properties. For example, lead powder mixed with various plastics and epoxies forms a compound that am be troweled onto rexmating machinery guards and shrouds to form a.'thsck sound absorbent that retains flexibility and resil iency. It out be sprayed, bonded or coated onto or into metal pans and machinery to reduce and contain sound at its source. Lead powder in vinyl with a fabric backing is commonly used as a curtain or shroud to enclose noisy operations and procoses. Used as an isolation pad under equipment and even structural components in buildings, kad is unsurpassed as a noise insulator. However, lead at a tound control is perhaps moat widely respected in budding construction applications such as those described briefly oo the following pages. IL. combines living quarters and office plus retail stores, restau rants and perking garages m one structure Two primary noise prob lems were evident to the designers of the Puiidmg--the building would generate high noise level because of machinery and equipment need ed tor all the functions the building serves and wall construction be tween apartments had to be flexible to allow for building movement. This meant a problem of sound leakage from one apartment to the next. The solution to the machinery area noise problem was solved by nailing firring strips to the inside wall (standard concrete Mock) of each equipment room and titling the soace between strips with acousti cal wool Gypsum board sraa than nailed over the strips and 2W-lb. per square foot sheet lead (5/128* thick) waa placed over the wall board Edges of the sheet lead were forded into lock seams and sealed with duct tape A second course of gypsum board wee than installed to Mah the wad*. Two factors had so be taken Ms account in the design of the sound barriers between apartments- the movement of the building in the wind, and the narrow width of the muiliona where the inside walla joined the perimeter walla. Two pieces of H' gypsum board were used on either side of 3S' metal studs. A channel 2' deep and ts` wide was attached to the mullion and floor and overhead spandrel. Gypsum. H* thick, was fitted insida the channal allowing a w* air space. Where |omts occurred in the sheet lead, closure was made by making Hat lock seams and sealing them with duct tape.
