INTRODUCTION:
Since inception of the Dispersion Stabilization Concept (DSC} Program, approximately 3,000 finished product stability samples have been evaluated. Data encompasses D.S.C. formulations for each of the 25 pigments in the Universal Colorant gamut. The performance of 7 of these Colorants is reviewed in this initial report on stability. A final report will issue when data for the remaining 1$ colorants have been analyzed.

Stability performance of products containing the seven
subject Universal Colorants is equivalent to their conventional based counterparts* Based on the vast amount of data supporting
this conclusion, further stability piloting of specific Universal Colorants will be discontinued* Performance data for the remaining IS dispersions in the Universal Colorant gamut are being analyzed with a final report no follow.
Stability data for Dispersion Stabilization Concept (DSC) formulations for the seven subject pigments are being summarized to (1) inform management of program status; (2) eliminate superfluous and time consuming stability testing enabling more effective and efficient disposition of manpower towards meeting established commercialization goal dates and (3) enable a cross-reference with recently published durability data to give a complete definition of Universal Colorant performance.
RESULTSs
Overall stability performance test results for the seven Universal Colorants (listed below) compared to their conventional base counterparts in straight and modified alkyd products are equivalent.
Tables I through VIZ review the stability results of straight and modified alkyd product pilots containing 330-1393 ("Monastral** Maroon Universal Dispersion), 330-1505 ("Monastral" Blue Universal Dispersion), 330-1559 (Indo Violet Universal Dispersion), 330-2502 (Milori Blue Universal Dispersion), 330-1705 ("Monastral" Green Universal Dispersion), 330-1010 ("Monastral" Violet Universal Dispersion) and 330-1019 ("Monastral Red Universal Dispersion)
Because of the large number of individual tests which were run on each stability sample, only those results which differed
between control and experimental are noted* Therefore, where a particular result is listed in the "Remarks" column, it signifies that all other properties evaluated were equal to control* When
slight variations and inconsistencies in performance were found, conclusions were based on a systems performance over the entire duration of testing rather than on specific intervals; e.g., seed resistance of an experimental system slightly poorer than control at one month; slightly superior than control at two months; and equal to control at six months; was considered equivalent to control. Unless otherwise noted, sample stability was evaluated to six month shelf*
All product line numbers from 701 to 799 represent modi fied alkyd quality while all other line numbers indicate straight alkyd quality. Table VIII defines the product quality for each of
the product line numbers listed in Tables I through VII.

Some Colorants have been evaluated more extensively than others and stability results for a specific dispersion are based on earlier as well as currently scaled-up formulas . Only slight modifications have been made since initial formulation of the Colorants and basically* results obtained from these earlier
dispersions correlate closely to data obtained from current formulas*
DISCUSSION a
In defining stability performance of 330-Line dispersions several parameters were involved as follows?
(1) Quality of Product Pilots - To determine the
universal application of a Colorant as a replacement for its 42, 732 and 743-line conventional base analogs* evaluation of each was
made in metallic and non-metallic, straight and modified alkyd quality enamels* Each Colorant was evaluated in masstone and tint
according to formulating practices and tables# In addition* all Colorants were evaluated in active finished product formulas
piloted with both conventional and other Universal Colorants. Although only results in straight and modified alkyd qualities are
presented here* satisfactory evaluations have been made in thermo setting acrylic enamels and to a lesser extent in vinyl and acrylic lacquer qualities.
(2) Duration - Routine tests were run at intervals up to six months in most evaluations, with occasional testing to twelve months. Testing intervals varied with the specific product,
but included evaluation of at least one oven (120p) and three shelf samples during the six month period*
(3) Testing - To determine performance, routine control tests such as gallon weight, viscosity, settling, seed, gloss, hardness, flexibility, adhesion and color were evaluated. Visual and microscopic analyses were made on many of the pilots to determine flocculation and pigment orientation* When dictated by product end use, tests specific to an individual product were run, e.g, humidity resistance, salt spray, grease resistance and stain resistance would be run on an appliance enamel. A typical evalu ation is presented in Table IX. This particular evaluation was the basis for the conclusion formed in,Table V, 793-M.

Results demonstrate that the stability of products con taining any one or a combination of the seven subject Universal Colorants are equivalent to their conventional based counterparts.
Although each of the seven Colorants may differ in the specific polymer and solvent system which they require to achieve a highly deflocculated and stable dispersion, they are all based on the same concept - D.S.C. Results in addition to demonstrating that products containing the specific Colorants are stable also show that the basic mechanism used to effect stability is a sound one.

Therefore, it is concluded that further stability piloting of
330-1393, 330-1505, 330-1559, 330-25*2, 330-17*5, 330-1*1* and 330-1*19 is not necessary and future commercialization proposals with these dispersions will be based on the general premise that the DoS.Co formulations are stable in all straight and modified alkyd finished products*
