Dear Dr. Machle: We now have several thousand copies of the Jobber Information Reports giving us some information on the number and capacity of leaded gasoline storage tanks. It is difficult for the men to make these reports out satisfactorily not knowing exactly the nature of the problem and what information is desired. I note in going through these that considerable confusion exists as to what is considered cleaning of these tanks. In some cases they are never cleaned; in some cases they are reported to be cleaned at inter vals; in other cases the water is reported to be drained and other general statements are made. If we are to get specific information which would seem to be necessary for any compilation in the striking of averages at a later date, it would seem necessary to ask more specific questions of our representa tives. I am attaching hereto a rough outline of what information would seem desirable. Naturally, we should endeavor to cut this down to the fewest possible questions. On the other hand, there may be something we have overlooked which you feel should be included or again your analytical work on samples already taken may indicate that we can disregard this part of the program. Tanks have never "been cleaned and no cleaning is contemplated. A. Are tanks under or above ground surface? B. Do they have a manhole or some way of entering? C. Do they have any "bottom plugs or outlets, other than discharge outlet? D. How long used in leaded gasoline storage? 2. Tanks are drained of water bottom at intervals. A. Disposition of water after removal. B. Is any sludge removed with drainings. C. How long used in leaded gasoline storage? 3. Tanks are cleaned - water, scale, and sludge removed. A. Method of cleaning - how long is tank steamed before it is entered. 3rushed and scraped by hand - hosed out with high pressure hose. B. In what state is scale and sludge removed - wet or dry? C. Equipment used: Is mask used - if so, what type? - Gloves used - what kind? Rubber, leather or canvas, etc? Special clothing ~ is this used? D.
