Present Situation and Justification Basic lead carbonate is made in two carbonating tanks and pumped into a holding tank above the drum dryer. It is then dried, ground and further processed as required. The pumping operation to the holding tank above the drum dryer is accomplished by the use of a steam pump installed in 1966. The pump is badly worn. It leaks carbonate slurry on the floor and into the sewer system, aggravating the plant's effluent problems. An overhaul will cost $2,618. The resultant repair is judged to be short-lived. This pump is near the end of its useful life and the plant has no other pump to use as a replacement in case of failure. ' A trial, air-operated diaphragm pump, the same as will be purchased, was tested recently with success in lead carbonate service. Also, the plant uses a similar design air pump in lead phthalate-sulfate processing. Its design is far more economical to maintain than the old steam pump. Present steam pump will be scraped. \ Contingent Future Commitments This proposal will not require additional funds to complete. Alternatives Considered Repair phe present steam pulftp. This was rejected because of the high cost of parts, labor, and limited useful life. The new pump will be more economical to maintain. Risks No operating risks are involved.
