It Barytes or Whiting Is also used, we think that the . covering capacity and general quality Is reduced, besides cheap ening the Paint. _ That most manufacturers o! Paints believe that Lead and line are the proper pigments of which to make Mixed and Paste .'^ints, and that they have endeavored to establish that Idea (or s'Vtqdard) in the trade, is shown by their advertising matter. ' ^Considering the Immense difference In the value of Zinc and Lead, worth front 4 to 6 cents per pound, compared with Whiting and Barytes, worth from j to 14 cents per pound, the trade will readily see the great disadvantage under which those manufacturers are placed who nee only Lead and Zinc for a base for Mixed and Paste Paints, by those manufacturers who use proportions of Barytes or Wbiting, and who do not in their advertising or labels state that fact. *r To overcome the great disadvantage under which we often find ourselves thereby placed, and believing that the mataner In which some Mixed and Paste Paints were sold could only be made profitable by the use of cheaper materials, and knowing that by "Chemical Analysis'* alone could we abow the trade i.ia a plain way the difference between our goods sad others, we caused careful "Chemical Analyses'' to be nude of our Paints and of Paints sold by other houses, with results as shown In the table given below: We present to the trade for luformatlou the facts as found, with an .explanation of onr own goods. It may b present with the Baryta, of some of the others, as it Is often found in nature associated with heavy spar, lrom which the Barytes of commerce Is ground, and has the same general chemical properties that Barytes has. Dana's Mineralogy mentions Its presence la the Barytes of several localities in Germany, and investigation showed its presence In large proportion In a sa mple .of German ; Barytes In our possession. Same sample contained Sulphate of Lime. ' We think that It Is generally understood that a Urge pro portion of the mixed paint* sold In this country have a limited proportion of the oil replaced with other binding liquids.
