Process Description: Crossroad Farms Dairy (CFD) feeds plastic pellets from a hopper into a screw conveyor which also melts the pellets. Melted plastic drops into a mold which makes four half gallon or 1-gallon milk bottles. A chiller circulates refrigerant around the mold to solidify the plastic into shape. The bottle drops out of the mold, and is air cooled. The plastic flashing around the bottle's handle, top, and bottom are cut off. After a pressure test, each bottle is annealed to reduce the plastic's brittleness. If the chiller is not operating properly, the plastic becomes rubbery and the flashing does not cu(off cleanly. Further, rubbery flashing may catch fire in the annealer. Three of the blow mold chillers use 55 pounds ofR-22, and one uses 110 pounds ofR-22. CFD has started a project to replace all four blow mold chillers with ammonia-based chillers by August 2019. TOUR INFORMATION EPA toured the facility: Yes.
