April 16,1974 Present: MSW, WCF, AS, JCM, GF, DRM, WJB, GHF. 1.0 Review of Actions Needed arising from previous minutes. 1.1 DRM is doing analysis of prebatching. One report is complete and a final report due by 5/1/74. DRM does not feel that pre batching is feasible and that we should be focusing on Premix as a viable method to increase productivity and pulping accuracy. 1.2 AS/DRM report on the high shear liquification of RM X3580 that the present method would cost $0.12/lb. RM X3580. Improvements can be made by having vendor supply material with more drum' space, for mixing. Supplier will be contacted to see if this is possible. Action: DRM Marketing will evaluate effects of additional cost on contribution and approve its application. Action: GF 1.3 SJC has completed 24 capitals for Engineering modifications necessary to expedite the asbestos-free transition. MSW will secure necessary signatures - completion dace estimated 6 months from date of approval. Action: MSW 1.4 SJC will order blow tank and associated hardware for k-4 installation. Action: SJC 1.5 G. Fenton approved Che shipment of a large run (160 sets) of 470 rings (injection formed) to be warehoused at Corrntercial Solvents. 1.6 No action taken on investigation of sugar as a binder. 2.0 Review'of testing since last meeting. Due to the crisis in FYAC and the real uncertainty of whether future availability of PVAC could support asbestos-free recipes EF 5484 and EP 5492, no testing was scheduled. 2.1 Modifications of Mark IV holding tank agitator have not accomplished the intended effects. No experimental recipes will be tested on Mark IV until further alterations are completed. (3:30 a.m., Saturday, 4/20/74, 2.0 hrs.) 2837 Asbestos-Frcc Meeting Tuesday, 4/16/74 April 18, 1974 Page 2 3.0 Effects of PVAC shortage on asbestos-free program. 3.1 WJB reports that with the Technical Department approval of alternate suppliers of PVAC, we now have 3 suppliers: Allied Chemical, Celancse and Bordtyu He anticipates that these three can support our requirements. We have ordered 2 truckloads (80,000#) - one scheduled for delivery by k/22/74, the second by May 7. 3.2 If for any reason this shipment is delayed beyond 4/22/74, we would have to convert all EP 5465A production to EP 5465D (starch) and P-31C production to P-31B. 4.0 Finalization of recipes. 4.1 AS will issue modifications of existing recipes, i.e., EP 5484A and EP 5492A. These modifications are intended to make a softer less rigid material. 4.2 ' Based on the sense of priorities from Marketing, the following tests have been scheduled through KT. There are several interdepartmental work orders outstanding, and he would like to have these expedited as quickly 2S possible in order to keep manufacturing expenses in line. Action: WJV 2838 ) AsbesCos-Free Meeting 'Tuesday, 4/16/74 'I April 18, 1974 Page 3 5.0 (continued) 5.2 WJB is concerned about future dependency upon Interpace as a single Wollastonite supplier. AS has investigated the West Coast supply of Wollastonite and fbund it to be unacceptable-- not acicular and contaminated with iron. Alternate sources of Wollastonite or asbestos substitute cannot be evaluated at present time due to lack of personnel. 5.3 WJB inquired when this plant would be capable of using Interpace's scheduled increased production. The concern lies in the fact that once Interpace begins to produce at 600 tons/month and we can only consume 200 tons/month, they may very well search for other customers and if found, may not support our requirements when our capabilities have been improved. MSW recommended that he and WJB visit Interpace. Action: MSW 5.4 WCF inquired about the status of the #386 injection formed cool. RTC replied that the tool will be complete by the end of this month.
