B WIRE CONNECTOR OUTSIDE PLANT PRODUCTS MANUAL SPLICING MATERIALS 9/78 DESCRIPTION JOINING CONDUCTORS OF CABLE OR SERVICE WIRE The B wire connector is designed to be used on aluminum, copper, and copper-steel conductors with pulp insulation. It gives a reliable, but not waterproof, joint. It is not recommended for splicing any PIC cables. The B wire connector is available loose or on taped rolls. In addition, the connector can be obtained lined or unlined. The lined connector has a plastie lining which is placed into the connector to prevent hang-up of wire ends which results in incomplete insertion. A joint is made by fully inserting the ends of conductors into the E wire connector and pressing with an approved presser tool. All B wire connector joints containing aluminum conductors, and all other joints that will be placed below ground, must be encapsulated as described in BSP 632-410-203. Plastic Lined B Wire Connector Where high splicing productivity is possible, taped, plastic-lined B wire connectors can be used. The B, C, and D connector pressers are the approved presser tools for B wire connectors. Lined, Toped B Wire Connectors RULES FOR B WIRE CONNECTOR USAGE Approved wire combinations are listed in BSP 632-205-201. Generally, the following rules must be observed: (1) 26- and 24-gauge copper PIC conductors do not require insulation removal. (2) 22-gauge and larger copper PIC conductors must be stripped back 3/4 inch. (3) 26- through 22-gauge copper conductors insulated with pulp or paper do not require insulation removal. (4) 17- and 20-gauge aluminum conductors with insulation removed may be joined but encapsulation of the joints is required. (5) 20-gauge copper-steel conductors may be joined with the insulation removed. (6) Remove insulation from all gauges of polypropylene-insulated conductors in filled cable before being joined. (7) Some combinations of the above conductors are not permitted because of large differences in size. See BSP 632-205-201 for these combinations.
