DEFORD, C&M, ENVIRONMENTAL AFFAIRS, 2020, 6-6978 SUBJECT: EH&S UPDATE FOR EDCA/CM BUSINESS Follows is my quarterly update on the status of health & environmental studies for the EDC/VCM Business. This summary will update the business on current activities being conducted under the auspices of the CMA VCM Panel and the HAPS Task Force. CMA VCM Health Panel: Developmental -Reproduction Study The combined 2 generation developmental-reproduction study protocol has finallybeen agreed to by ATSDR. The study was initiated by the contract lab in early September. If study goes as planned, the findings should be available late in 1997. Dows-Bill Breslin, a respected reproductive toxicologist, will be paid by the CMA panel to audit the contract laboratory and to assist in interpretingfindings. DNA Adduct Study: Panel is supporting a DNA adduct study to be conducted by Dr. Swenberg (UNC) aimed at trying to gain an understanding or explanation about the allegations (based on limited data in animal studies) that younger populations may have a greater sensitivity to VCM exposure than adults. It is critical for us to better understand this potential effect as the EPA begins differentiating sensitive populations in risk assessments. Epidemiology CMA Update: Good progress continues to be made on collecting and updating records lost from the past contractor. Results from the update should be available late 1997 - early 1998. Carlos Tamburro - Brain Cancer Pathology Study: The objective of this study is show through pathology review of brain tissues from workers employed in a Goodrich vinyl facility that the cancer was not due to vinyl monomer exposure. The CMA Panel has had the protocol for this work peer reviewed and is waiting for Dr. Tamburro to make revisions prior to approving the initiation of the work (study expected to take about 1 year.) HAPS TASK FORCE: Dow, as a part of an industry group,is working aggressively to collect information to be used in comments to be filed by 12/96 in response to the HAPS Test Rule. This proposal would require over six million dollars in toxicity testing for EDC and 1,1,2-trichloroethane. To date, we have done a comprehensive review of the existing toxicity data base identifying studies which can be used to meet data gaps identified by EPA. Also, we are working with Texas/LA environmental folks to gather emissions & modeling data so that we can show through risk assessment that the current levels shouldpass the residual risk determination.
