At the end of the month the plant had worked 542 days since the last disabling injury and 133 days since the last injury requiring medical attention. A new respirator, the 3M "Airhat" was introduced in the compound area to improve protec tion against exposure to lead and antimony. It has been well accepted by operating personnel. PVC resin production continued above budget at 29.4 MM pounds. A daily charge record of 28 and a weekly production record of 1074 M pounds were established during the month. The new hot water tank and methocel charge revisions in the old reactor module were completed and put in service. New module downtime was taken to reroute the fire water line and make expansion tie-ins. High maintenance Rotex screeners were replaced with more operable Sweco systems on three dryers. VCM efficiency was 1.02949 pounds of VCM per pound of PVC versus a 1.01960 standard; year to date efficiency is 1.01940. Production of 5305 resin using a chain transfer agent became routine operation on December 16, thereby decreasing reactor operating pressure and reducing the potential for reactor relief discharges. Compound production totaled 4.4 MM pounds with the operation of Line III and intermittant operation of Lines I and V. New 1iners were installed in the FCM hopper and other maintenance projects were completed during a planned shutdown. Quality performance was 4.2% off grade with 77.2% due to mill scrap. Dry Blend produced 3.5 MM pounds and daily average rates began to improve with more attention to optimizing the operation of that unit. Quality performance for the month was 99 99% customer grade. Plasticizer produced 1.0 MM pounds for internal usage. The PVC expansion proceeded with concrete work still in progress and most parts of the fluid bed dryer in the plant. The reactor vendor, Nooter Corp., was on strike most of the month, but went back to work in late December. DTH 000069167 R. E. VCM price con tributed $614.0 M of the price variance. The total plant variable cost variance for 1980 was $844.2 M with $677.6 M due to price and $166.6 M due to efficiency.
