DONN JOHNSON: "Monsanto Chemical Company made an environmental mess some 30 years ago. Tonight they've agreed to clean it up."
DANA KING: "Earthwatch reporter Bruce Gordon explains it settles a nine year legal battle."
BRUCE GORDON: "Illinois Attorney General sued Monsanto for dumping hazardous waste from its Sauget plant into this landfill from 1959 through 1977. Some of the contaminants seeped into the ground water and the Mississippi River. Such dumping practices were outlawed around 1970."
DENNIS ORSEY (IL Asst. Attorney General): "At some point and time federal or state government steps in and says this kind of activity is illegal, it needs to stop and the activity didn't stop."
GORDON: "Under a court settlement Monsanto agrees to pay $150,000 in fines, fund an EPA supervised study of the site, then pay for whatever cleanup is necessary. Despite the settlement Monsanto's Sauget plant manager denies the dumping was illegal at the time."
BILL BOYLE (Monsanto Plant Manager): "The opened in 1959 and was in full compliance will all regulations of that era and remained in compliance closing."

GORDON: "Bill Boyle said to the best of Monsanto's knowledge the dumping here has not caused any threat to public health. Still, the company expects when its study is complete some cleanup here will be necessary but that cleanup is probably at least three years away.

KING: "And lawsuits against several other companies accused of illegal dumping in Sauget are still pending.
