DANA KING: "Earthwatch reporter Bruce Gordon explains it settles a nine year legal battle." BRUCE GORDON: "Illinois Attorney General sued Monsanto for dumping hazardous waste from its Sauget plant into this landfill from 1959 through 1977. Some of the contaminants seeped into the ground water and the Mississippi River. Such dumping practices were outlawed around 1970." DENNIS ORSEY (IL Asst. Attorney General): "At some point and time federal or state government steps in and says this kind of activity is illegal, it needs to stop and the activity didn't stop." GORDON: "Under a court settlement Monsanto agrees to pay $150,000 in fines, fund an EPA supervised study of the site, then pay for whatever cleanup is necessary. Despite the settlement Monsanto's Sauget plant manager denies the dumping was illegal at the time."
