OWENS CORNING FIBERG CORPORATION 3 V I &Z FIBERGLAS PF PIPE INSULATION Description Fiberglas PF pipe Insulation is made of fine-fibered glass wool, resin bonded, and molded in simplified di mensional standards, to fit pipe surfaces. It is recom mended for pipes operating at temperatures up to 450F. The resilient fibers mesh at the joints to give continuous, effective insulation. PF Pipe Insulation is available with a variety of factory applied jackets for use indoors or out, on heated lines. Properties PF Pipe Insulation is light in weight and easy to handle yet dense enough to be strong and durable. Like other Fiberglas materials, it resists moisture, will not support combustion, and has exceptional physical stability. Its low thermal conductivity is illustrated by the graph at right. Sizes Fiberglas PF Pipe Insulation is available for iron pipe sizes from Vi inch through 33 inches and for copper tubing sizes from 2^ inch through 6 inches. It is supplied in 3 foot lengths. Sizes and thicknesses available are given in table on opposite page. Advantages Efficiency--Fiberglas PF Pipe Insulation is first in effi ciency among molded materials within its service range. Its intricate maze of fibers traps countless tiny pockets of still air--one of nature's best insulators--and effec tively reduces heat loss. Resiliency--The resiliency of the glass fibers enables PF Pipe Insulation to resist damage from constant vibration or from thermal shock due to rapid tempera ture change. . Incombustible--PF Pipe Insulation, in common with other Fiberglas products, will not support combustion. Nesting Sizes--PF Pipe*-Insulation is manufactured in accordance with the "new simplified dimensional stand ards". The outside diameters conform to standard pipe diameters. This permits easy nesting and gives a wider selection of insulation thicknesses for multiple layer construction. Easy Installation--PF Pipe Insulation is easy to cut and fit. A knife is the only tool needed. The insulation can be "tailored" to fit standard pipe couplings for a neater, more effective application. Finer fibers make the product pleasant to handle. Limitations PF Pipe Insulation should not be used on pipes operat ing at temperatures above 450F. For low temperature lines. Dual Temperature Pipe Insulation is recommended. If PF Pipe Insulation is used on low temperature lines, a suitable vapor-barrier jacket must be installed over the insulation. The insulation should be protected from mechanical damage in locations where it will receive abuse. 8 The standardization of Fiberglas PF Pip* Insulation sizes, to conform to simplified dimensions, mokes possible reductions up to 40 per cent in inventory lists and storage space requirements. The strong wire mesh is cut to the right length to fit each pipe size. Selvages for easy, long lasting application are fabricated from 26-gauge sheet metal, folded twice, and crimped about the cut ends of the wire to form a metal edge 34 inch wide. Blanket Type Pipe Insulation is designed for insulating , pipes from 3 inches to 42 inches in diameter, operating at temperatures up to 1000F. |; Properties All the general properties common to Fiberglas insula tions are present in Fiberglas Blanket Type Pipe Insula tion. It resists moisture, will not support combustion, will not rot, and will not cause or accelerate corrosion of metal pipe. Its thermal conductivity averages .25 Btu,sq.ft./ degree F. at 75F. mean temperature* Advantages Versatility--Its flexibility makes Fiberglas Blanket Type Insulation ideal for spiral-riveted or spiral-welded pipes of irregular dimensions and for normal high tem perature lines where metal or roofing felt finishes are desired. . Efficiency--Interlocked glass fibers form countless tiny pockets which trap still air and provide high insulating efficiency. Jjasy Application --Its light weight makes this insula tion easy to handle. Application consists of wrapping the "blanket" around the pipe and lacing or tying the facing selvages together. Fiborglos Blanket Type Pipe Insulation U light in weight, eaty to hand!# in oven the most inaccessible places, and easy to apply. Finishes Insulation on indoor or outdoor piping should be jack eted. One suitable finish is 55-lb. roofing felt, lapped 2 inches at every seam. The roofing felt is secured with No. 16 wire or with bands. Finish can also be a galvanized sheet metal jacket with seams lapped 2 inches against the weather and secured in place with sheet metal screws on 6-inch cen ters, or with metal bands. A sheet metal screw attached at each lap of jacket sections will prevent slippage on vertical runs of pipe. All flanges, valves, and fittings should be finished wit! two 3^-inch layers of Fiberglas O-C Mastic reinforces with a tight wrapping of an open mesh glass fabri> between the layers of mastic. Application Fiberglas Blanket Type Pipe Insulation is applied over dry pipe, with all edges tightly fitted together. The longitudinal selvage edges are laced or tied together w*th wire. On bends, the selvages should be laced or tied together fhe outside radius of the bend and the wire mesh on be inside radius of the bend shortened to conform to ^be contour of the pipe. Ranges, valves, and fittings can be insulated with lerglas Metai Mesh Blankets. They are formed to fit i2*t.Cu^ w^er necessary. All cut edges are laced together wire. A small amount of asbestos fiber is included at the time of manufacture. Kaylo Pipe Insulation is suited for use on pipes operating at temperatures up to 1200F. It is manu factured by Owens-Illinois Glass Company and dis tributed nationally by the Owens-Coming Fiberglas Corporation. Properties Kaylo Pipe Insulation resists moisture. It is incombus tible and dimensionally stable. Its coefficient of thermal conductivity is very low among products in its tempera ture range as shown by the graph at right. Sizes Owens-Coming Fiberglas Corporation can supply Kaylo Pipe Insulation in semi-cylindrical sections for pipes up to 12 inches in diameter and in three-segment units for pipes up to 23 inches. See the table on page 13. The segmented construction of Kaylo Pip* Insulation moans aaty installation. Simplified dimensions assure snug and accurate netting. Limitations Kaylo Pipe Insulation is designed for pipes operating at temperatures up to 1200F. THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY Advantages Efficiency--Kaylo Pipe Insulation offers exceptional in sulating value. So small and so numerous are its insu lating air spaces that they present a material internal surface of approximately 100 acres per cubic foot of insulation. Resistance to Moisture--Water does not break down the structure of Kaylo. Even saturated, it retains an appreciable percentage of its strength. After being soaked for long periods of time and then dried, it returns to its original thermal efficiency and strength, without apparen^_ghrinking or warping. Easy Application--Kaylo Pipe Insulation is light and easy to handle. Its sectional or segmented construction makes it easy to apply. Long Service--Kaylo remains strong and efficient over the years. It shows little shrinkage even after constant, prolonged exposure to temperatures up to 1200F. Versatility--Kaylo performs efficiently on temperatures through the hot water and low pressure steam range and also through temperatures in the superheated steam range. Kaylo can be used alone for high temperatures which usually require combinations of two different insulating materials. Single layer application, for labor saving, is possible on pipes operating up to 700F. ' Nesting Sizes--Outside diameters of Kaylo Pipe Insu lation correspond to outside diameters of standard pipes. Where multiple layer application is needed, all layers nest perfectly to provide high efficiency at any desired thickness. 12 RECOMMENDED THICKNESSES Resulting in Maximum Surface Temperature of !30F. at 80F.
