INTERNAL CORRESPONDENCE ct w* FROM R. T. Cheng TO Ed Lu SUBJECT Industrial Hygiene Instruments IN REPLY refer to RTC 74:213 DATE 12/9/74 Instead of purchasing miniature personal sampling pumps for taking 8-hour VCM samples with small charcoal tubes, an alternative is to sample the air with standard size personal sampling pump with large size charcoal absorption tubes which your laboratory can make. The advantages of the standard size personal sampling pumps are that you can use those pumps for dust sampling, midget impinger samplings, and many other types of operations which a miniature sampling pump is incapable of. Attached is an operation manual from General Tire & Rubber Company and Dow Chemical Company on how to prepare the large size charcoal absorption tubes, and how to run the vinyl chloride samples. Dr. J. 0. Jackson will send you a letter recommending the type of gas chromato graph and other accessories to be purchased for VCM sampling and analysis. R. T. Cheng RTC:nm Attachment cc: R. L. Attack, flexible tubing to exhaust port (top) of a v:st test meter and the other- end to the absorption tube. Turn cr, the pump and adjust pomp flow so that wet test meter rate is 6 J-i cu. ft. an hour at a 1 minute observation. This setting will punp a .Tele of air- in ten minutes. If the pump being calibrated is not capable of pumping one mole of air in 10 minutes, then simply reduce the volutsn of the solvent to the proportion of. a mole that the puir.n cen.-p-.vip. Examplet OfcJi pump ,t1 can only pur.p ?2,3,1 of a nolo of air in 10 minutes co inr.toed c-f using 1 mole of Of ^ (60.1 cz) only h3o5 cc is used. The ratio remains the some so no further calculation is necessary. If ths pump being used can only pump a small portion of v. ncQs '.ho above procedure cannot be used because there will not be enargh solvent to desorbs the TOZ from, th.e carbar..
