Safety train ing during the month included the annual VCM and lead slide and tape programs. Resin production was 30.3 MM pounds for a new monthly production record compared to the October, 1979 record of 28.8 MM. Dryer performance was strong with a 93.1% stream factor. Revisions were made to stripping procedures to minimize vibration and this allowed a return to 5385 production in the new reactor module beginning January 7. Various steam stripping nozzles were tested later in the month and a long term solution of the vibration problem with spargers has proven feasible. A test run was conducted to make 5305 with a chain transfer agent and product quality appears to be good. Evaluation of dry blend made from this resin is scheduled for February. Compound production was 3.0 MM pounds with Line V continuing to operate inter mittently. The remaining problem with this line is hard particles in the finished compound. Wemer-Pfleiderer and PAL are assisting in resolving this situation. Quality performance for compound was 1.9% off-grade with 71.7% due to mill scrap. Dry Blend operation was limited for inventory control purposes to 1.9 MM pounds. Plasticizer production was .25 MM pounds. On January 8, the atmospheric T-100 phthalic anhydride tank ruptured from overpressure while unloading a railcar into it. The in-plant investigation determined the cause to be a solidified vent that apparently plugged during the unloading. The replacement tank will be a pressure vessel with improved venting safety features. Molten phthalic anhydride facilities are scheduled to be back in service by March 1. Flaked material is being utilized and plasticizer inventories are being allowed to drop in the meantime. DTH 000043784 f& R. E.
