July 1, 1966 1--0508 -- 9000 -- Cost 36-90796 INSPECTION - 2 OPEN HEARTH SUBHEAilTH BRICK An inspection of Peratex Brick from General Refractories korrisville, Pennsylvania, plant vra.3 conducted May 23-25, 1966. Ninety-five per cent of the brick order was inspected. The plant has operated intermittently the past few years and only very recently began manufacturing basic brick. This was the plant' 3 first attempt at manufacturing Peratex Brick. The per cent rejects during manufacture were very high due primarily to sticking together of the bricks. Bulk density (164 lbs./cu.ft.), cold modulus of rupture (2636-3305 psi), available from their quality control data, and the general appear ance of the bricks were all good. Statistical sampling applied to one-third of the order was used to obtain variation in dimensions. Length and width were good and \ coincided with their quality control figures.1 The variation on thickness was ex cessive and did not coincide with their measurements1; also some arching was observed V (thickness varied on same brick from side to side). As a result, statistical sampling was applied bo determine thickness variation on all the brick available for inspection (95$).2 Excessive thickness variation was confirmed. General Refractories agreed to regage the entire order so that 95$ of the br: ok would be within a l/fl" (.125") thickness range (2.90n-3.Q2u). \ Notes: 1. Table I, Attached 2.
