Ref. : ASBESTOS COUNTING TRIAL 1988
Dear Mrs. Janis WOODSON
You will find enclosed a provisional report of the 1988 circulation, in which one or several counters of your company have participated.
This provisional report indicates roughly the posi tion of your counters compared to the others, and their tendancy to over or underestimate the number of fibres on a sample.
The final report will be sent to you as soon as all counting results will be available.
Best Regards,
Enel. 2

ASBESTOS
COUNTING TRIAL, I9S S
Provisional Report
This report has been established on the basis of the counting results available at this time and some slight changes in the classification of the counters may occur at the end of the circulation.
As in the 1987 slide exchange, counters have been classified into three groups :
- Group 1 : Counters with a coefficient of variation111 less than 30 % and
a normalised mean*2> between 0.50 and 1.25
- Group 2 : Counters with a coefficient of variation less than 50 % and
a normalised mean between 0.50 and 1.50
- Group 3 : Counters with a coefficient of variation greater than 50 % or
a normalised mean outside of the range 0.50 and 1.50
The position of each counter is shown on the diagram, and the "red point" indicates the individual result of the counter.
A final version of this report will be forwarded as ffoon as all registered counters have retourned their results.
It is reminded that all the data and results are strictly anonymous.
(1) Coefficient of variation (intra-lab index) = the standard deviation (of a counter's normalised results) divided by the normalised mean. It is an index of the dispersion of the counter's results.
(2) Normalised mean (inter-lab index) = average of the coun ter's normalised results. It is an indication of over estimation or underestimation.

Dear Mr Pigg,
Please find enclosed a new set of 12 microscope slides together with a guidance note.
May we ask you to circulate this set of slides among the 3 laboratories according to a procedure of your choice.
On termination, would you please ask the last parti cipant to send back the slides direct to L.H.C.F.
In order to have the shortest delays between transfer of slides, we strongly recommend to dispatch them from one laboratory to another by "courrier". There should be no more than 14 days between two consecutive laboratories,
n Many thanks for your kind cooperation.

MEMORANDUM
To: MEMBER ASSOCIATIONS From: DIRECTOR GENERAL Subject: ASBESTOS COUNTING TRIAL (A.C.T. ) 1988
In reply please quote: AIA/20/2/13/HAS
Your Ref:
Date:
10 May 1988
You have probably received a copy of the L.H.C.F. Report on tine 1987 A.C.T. (dated March 1988). This slide exchange appears to have made a very useful contribution to all the laboratories involved in fibre counting.
Consequently, the AIA Dust Advisory Panel have recommended, and the Executive Committee have agreed to, a second slide exchange in 1988. The L.H.C.F. will again ensure the running of the A.C.T. and prepare the final Report.
The Executive Committee felt that for 1988 those laboratories which ' could afford to do so should be asked to make a contribution towards the costs of the A.C.T. Such laboratories will be contacted separately and in due course.
In order to avoid delays, it is strongly reconrrended that the L.H.C.F. procedure is followed. This will be sent to all participants returning the enclosed Registration Form.
Would you please contact all the interested laboratories in your country (including those which participated in 1987) encouraging them to take part in this A.C.T. and asking them to return their Registration Form as soon as possible to the L.H.C.F.
The analysis of the results will, of course, remain anonymous but each participant will personally receive a report pointing out his position among the other participants.
Following from experience in the last (1987) A.C.T., a provisional position data sheet will be sent out to each participant shortly before the final Report.
As we anticipate extensive participation, we once again urge you please to ask participants to reply promptly.
