Visual inspection will only reveal obvious wear and damage. In order to accurately determine the serviceability of a disc brake rotor, the use of precision measuring instruments is required. Rotor Visual Inspection You can usually perform a visual inspection without removing the rotor. With the wheel removed the outer surface of the rotor is exposed. The inner surface may be covered by a splash shield, but you can usually inspect the inner surface by looking between the splash shield and the rotor with a flashlight. During the visual inspection you are basically looking for two types of damage; cracks and scoring. Whenever a rotor exhibits a crack, it should be replaced. Scoring, which is the most obvious rotor damage, occurs in varying amounts. Light scoring of the rotor is normal and should not be a problem.
