Snbjecti Evaluation o f Asbestos Worker Xxposure, Brake Besearch Gbit. Scien tific Building
Am requested, an in d u stria l hygiene study was conducted to evaluate
eorker exposure to asbestos dust In the Brake Research Chit located a t the S c ie n tific Building, Research end Xggineering Center, the r e su lts o f the s i r samples taken are contained on the attached data sheet.
She operations carried on in the Brake Research Chit include the weighing and compounding o f dry asbestos and cutting, f ilin g , and abrasion wear te stin g o f the compounded asbestos brake HMne a t e r ia l. C mss operations are o f an interm ittent nature and are carried out in four separate rooms. <kily one o f these rooms i s equipped with process -
exhaust v en tilatio n , while the other rooms have norami building general v en tilatio n . Although lo c a l exhaust i s present in the room where
weighing and compounding are carried on, i t i# not being u tilise d fo r the operation.
a M r samples taken were evaluated considering the present threshold U n it value o f fiv e mppcf and the lover le v e l o f two mppcf lis te d by
the American Conference o f Governmental In d u stria l Hygienists as an Intended chen^ o f the TLT fo r asbestos d u st. As can be seen from the data* a l l ampleg a rt vlthln acceptable H a l t s .
Because o f the apprehension exhibited by the employes toward th eir
exposure to asb esto s, i t i s our opiniontM atm odification which involve l i t t l e or no expense are J u s t ifie d . These m odifications lnd.id moving the balance in the weighing and compounding room to an area where
e x istin g fle x ib le lo c a l exhaust ducts could be placed p ro x lw l to the belance while weighing. This seme procedure could, a lso be used fo r the .ilx sr oeed in compounding. The ia a s m odification would consist o f
cleaning the work bench used in the cutting snd f ilin g operation with a vacua* cleaner rather than bloving i t clean with an a i r hose.
