Alvarez visited us the week of 11/27/72, we recommended that they purchase Brabender extrusion equipment in order to have the capability for testing and assuring that gels are maintained at low levels in film grade resins. We made the point that Brabender extru sion is the most sensitive and reproducible means available for'detec ting gel producing contamination of film grade resin by smalf amounts of higher molecular weight resins. In correspondence recently received from Ing. Pablo Enriquez A,, he asked whether their Brabender Plastograph Model PL35 may be equipped with an extruder attachment to provide this testing capability. We agree with Brabender OHG, Germany, that this is not a good approach. The Model PL35 has an 0.5 horsepower motor and it is not sufficiently strong to give good extrusion performance for flexible compounds and may not be used at all for rigid compounds. Based on our experience, we recommend the following equipment for lab- oratory extrusion testing: Brabender Plasticorder PL V340 (3.4 metric horsepower) Extruder 25D with 25:1 L/D and 5:1 compression ratio 4" Adjustable Ribbon Die Head Assembly HBC/jt it, B.
