V The Traffic Cos=ittcc was given the assignment of reviewing standardisa tion of packaging in relation to carload shipping as veil us 'taking steps toward petitioning the National Classification Board to make changes in the National Motor Freight Classification to easing the situation with respect to nixed truckload shipments. STATISTICAL COMMITTEE KZPORT In the Chairman's ohs'ence JIM. Barnhart reported as follows: 1. In October l?(sS, the Statistical Comnittce recommended that for statistical reporting, the Association member making the ul imate shipment (except where the national account is a member of KIMA) should report sales of private branded materials, rather than the manufacturer. The purpose of this recommendation is to provide a better geographic breakdown end sales value for these shipments. Understanding that the 3oard of Directors voted 5 to 1 in. favor of this proposal, the Committee will put it into effect as soon as requested by the Board. 2. Pending the results of No. 1, and with Mr. Barnhart's cooperation, the Cosmdttee will follow through on another recent recommendation: To publish periodically the rules for reporting shipments by members of the HIMA. They now cover the exclusion of export sales, sales to original equipment manufacturers, structural insulations, and sales of private brand materials purchased from another manufac turer. It is the last exclusion that we propose to change, in ' cases of intra-Association purchases. 3. Mr. Barnhart has collected from all members lists of product trade names corresponding to the statistical reporting categories, as proposed by this Committee. This list will be ready for publica tion after correction of some errors and omissions which have come r to light. The Statistical Committee Chairmen has received,- through Mr. Barnhart, the assignment to gather a list of manufacturers in certain areas of the insulation industry not presently included in the National Insulation Manufacturers Association membership. An adjunct to thatassignment is the collection of certain marketing and distribution information on foam insulations. V?e will aim to have by June 15, 39^9 on interim report to Mr. Barnhart for distribution to the Board of Directors. -3- PUBLICITY COMMITTEE RZrCRT A. Walsh of Vdthen/Welsh Associates rcYieved the present prograss per taining to publicity in connection with IDCNA and the Duct Systems. OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH L SAFETY COMMITTEE REPORT R.L. Strickland reported as follows: A committee meeting was held in New York on December 11, I960. Chairman, Dr. Lee Grant. Three major items were discussed and acted upon by the committee: 1. Kettering Duct Study 2. U.S. Public Health request for assistance 3* University of California proposals. On December 12, I960, a Joint meeting was held by the Executive Committee of NIMA and the Duct Systems Committee. At this meeting . a report was made by Dr. Grant on the Kettering Duct Study, the U.S. Public Health Study, and the University of California Proposed Envi ronmental Study. At this meeting recommendations were made by the Health and Safety Committee: THE KETTERING STUDY could not proceed as scheduled due to the member companies not furnishing Dr. Cholak Job informa tion and clearances for Dr. Cholak to take air samples. * Assignments were wade to specific individuals to obtain this information. r Most of. this information has been obtained und forwarded to Dr. Cholak. The first report received from the Kettering Laboratory was very encouraging. The only fiber glass fibers found were from dust samples taken from, two light fixtures below the grills in the file room. This room had not been painted or dusted since 19^3. There were no airborne fiber glass fibers obtained in the duct system or at the .grill outlets. -*l- Thc U.S. PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICE request vuc referred to indi vidual member companies for handling, as this was not a re quest that could be sponsored by NIXA. UNIVERSITY 0? CALIFORNIA PROPOSAL -- By a majority vote of the Joint committees, the California Environmental Proposal was expanded to include a duct study. A subcommittee was proposed to discuss the cost, timing, and, parameters of *- expanded proposal with Dr. Cooper and Leroy Bnlzer. - A meeting vas held in February at the Berkley campus of the University of California. In attendance vers: Cliff She elder - J-M Dr. Xcnzen OCF R. Strickland - CSC Jack Barnhart HIMA. Dr. Cooper assured the committee that both studies (Environmental and Duct) could be conducted concurrently and completed in a 12-month period. The cost of these studies would be $33,COO . ($22,000 for the environmental and $11,000 Cor the duct portion). A written proposal has been presented to HIM\, vhich van for warded to the four glass fiber member companies. This proposal has been approved and returned to Dr. Cooper. Job sites.were selected and each member conpnny was assigned the responsibility of-getting specifications, operating data, and approvals for Dr. Cooper's staff to trie air samples. Also, 1 Dr. Cooper's staff vas to vork with the local Asbestos V/orkers Union for permission to work vith asbestos workers on the en vironmental portion of this study. Drs_. Konzcn and Edvards of 0CF were given the responsibility of coordinating the information and samples from member com panies for t)iis study. Most companies have been cooperative iii .supplying the informa tion required by Dr. Cooper. Dr. Edvards is following up with those companies that have not furnished the information needed. R.L.
