Dr. Johnston's work was reported here although not RSV 0003010 VCRTP not a part of the MCA project since it is related to the IBT studies * Dr* Keplinger's talk was substantially the same as the one to be given at the American Industrial Hygienists Association meeting the week of May 17 in Atlanta. The sugges tion was made that the discussion on investigating the effect of contaminated food should be clarified. All of the work described is done or nearing completion. Summaries of the presentations will be distributed to the Panel. 2. Proposals for Future Research 2.1 Birth Defects The recommendation of the Research Coordinators, reported by Dr. Torkelson, was to defer action until the re sults of the study currently underway by The center for Disease Control are known. The Panel accepted this recommendation. 2.2 Additional Metabolic Work Overwhelming approval by the Panel in a letter ballot to recommend the Dow protocol of February 5 to management contacts was reported by the Project Manager. Among the thirty companies supporting the VC project, only two indicated hesitation or objection to proceeding with this work. Following a very brief discussion, the action recommended in the ballot was sustained and management contacts will be asked to support the additional metabolic investigations expected to take about one year and to cost $115,000 (plus contingency funds and administrative expenses as necessary) 2.3 University of Louisville Dr. Torkelson outlined the Research Coordinator's recommendation for favorable Panel action on the proposal out lined in Dr. Tamburro's letter of April 20. It involves the study of immunological systems and electron microscopic eval uation of liver tissue. A primary objective of the work is to develop new diagnostic tools to predict disease resulting from VC exposure. The National Cancer Institute is supporting Dr. Tamburro's work on the application of known methods for the diagnosis and treatment of VC-related health problems in workers. A sense of urgency was relayed by Dr. Torkelson if Dr. Tamburro's staff is to be held together. RSV 0003011 VCRTP - 4 The level of funding requested for this project is about $235,000 per year with possible alternate funding of $200,000 per year (by reducing indirect cost). Since the full Panel has not yet seen the Tarriburro proposal (only the Research Coordinators have) and the matter is urgent, the decision was made to vote on supporting this research for one year. This was with the understanding that once the full Panel had a chance to review the proposal it would probably want to support this work for an additional two years. On motion duly made and seconded the Panel then voted (sixteen to one) to recommend to management contacts that the University of Louisville proposal be supported at the rate of $200,000 for the first year with contingency funds and adminis trative expenses as needed recognizing that similar requests will probably be made in the next two years so that continuity of the effort can be maintained. 3. Minutes of Last Meeting Minutes of the December 11, 1975 Panel meeting were approved as distributed. 4. Financial Statement A financial statement dated April 1 is appended. 5. Public Relations The sentiment of the Panel was that there was no need for a news release or other notification of this meeting outside of MCA. Nearly all of the material covered had been sent to appropriate government agencies in the form of reports. Further more, for those studies that were not yet finished, completion of the work and issuance of the reports were expected very shortly. These will be made available to government personnel in the usual way and in addition it is expected that results will be published in a suitable technical journal. 6. Selection of Vice Chairman Acting on the recommendation of the Research Coordinators, the Panel voted unanimously for Dr. W. Mayo Smith as Vice Chairman. 7.
