These were added to the product during manufacture. Sales of fireproofing products containing asbestos were discontinued during 1973. As promised, I have enclosed information on commercially-available sealers advertised by their respective companies as being effective in sealing the surface of asbestos-containing materials. We have no information on the effectiveness of these products. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions con cerning this situation. Verytruly yours, RAM:ds Enclosures Robert A. POTtNT 1 AJ_ HA/LARD index for sprayed asbestos coatings Asbestos dust from sprayed asbestos coating is a function of several factors. These factors are considered separatelyf numerically rated, and a combined index generated to describe ___ the potential hazard. 02090^3 A. Condition--After some time has elapsed, deterioration nay occur in the coating which is visually evaluated. No consideration is given as to now the damage occurred. Rating Numbers 1. No apparent deterioration. 2. Slight deterioration. 3. Many areas of small change. 4. Severe damage and falls. B. Friability--A qualitative deteraination of the ability, of the material to crumble and be an airborn dust. Rating Numberi 1. Very hard--requires tools and force to dust. 2. Hard but will dust under mild-fingernail probe. 3. Soft but gummy. 4. Soft and crush in fingers.. C. Accessibility--A aeasure of occupant activity and location of the coating. Rating Number s 1* Totally encloeed and sealed off. 2. Partially enclosed, e.g.. suspened ceiling. 3. Open but above ten feet. 4. Open--gyms, halls and stairwells, cafeterias, ect. Asbestos say be used in the following locations: 1. As fire and thermal insulation in the boiler room and aechanieal rooas. 2. As a thermal insulation on the boiler. 2. As a thermal insulation on steaa pipes throughout the building. The potential hazard frost asbestos is frost any dusts which aay be developed. For this reason, the material of concern is that aaterial which is soaewhat soft or crushable. When the asbestos is bound into tile or transits, the only concern is from dusts of cutting operations. If in doubt whether the material contains asbestos, a sample aay be sent to the Division of Occupational Hygiene for analysis. In situations where an asbestos dust may be generated froa contact or other operations, an effective program should be developed to reduce the potential hazard. The following recoimendations are presented for inclusions in such a program: 1. All patching and repairing materials should be of non-asbestos content. 2. Asbestos containing materials should be thoroughly wet with water pTior to any repair work to reduce the generation of dusts. 3. All clean-up of the materials should be done by wet methods, i.e., mopping: no dry sweeping or vacuuming: .4 Pipe lagging should be painted with an elastomeric compound with appro priate fire rating and environmental durability.* 5. Where such surfaces such as pipe lagging are accessible to damage by building occupants, there should be mechanical enclosures to prevent punctures, and generation of asbestos dusts. -^ / 6. NIOSH approved dust respirators should be worn for all asbestos related work. If youvwould like.further information on removal procedures, or any other related cattcr, please contact the Division of Occupational Hygiene, 39 Boylston Street, Eoston. NEW JERSEY 080S7 02099489 Respected Friend: Thank you for responding to our recent advertisement on Asbestos Contain ment in the August issue of Building Operating Management. Extensive studies and many installations have been effected in past years. These have since been "time" confirmed as to in-place treatment as a viable alternative to the hazards and excessive costs in removability. Successful project conclusions varied from boiler rooms, printing plants, drug manufacturers, a well-known telephone company, schools, cafeterias, libraries, hospitals, steel corporation. Federal and State facility, com mercial buildings, among many others. Sizes ranged from five hundred to hundreds of thousands of square feet. All successfully concluded with mini-; mum interruption of facility activity or shutdown. Accordingly, we are enclosing descriptive brochure, data sheets, and related literature that can serve your interest further as a possible alternative to removability. Applications of a Hydro-Ban Asbestos Containment Treatment can be concluded with your own personnel, or responsible contractors under our. monitoring and guidance. All regulatory requirements-with regard to health and safety to occupants, personnel and facility strictly adhered to. Two coats must be applied and it is strongly advised that different colors be used for the two coats to ensure even application. During spraying the operative must be satisfied that the finish reaches the correct thickness, details of which can be found in the section dealing with coverage. In very special circumstances, one single coat can be applied up to the prescribed thickness, although inform ation should always be obtained from the manufacturers before this method of application is adopted. BRUSHING Decade* Firccheck can easily be applied by brush and the correct method of application is to lay on the first coat evenly, finishing in one direction only. After the first coat has dried, the second layer should be applied and finished by brushing at right angles to the first. All brushes and equipment can be cleaned with water so long as the Decade* Firccheck compound is wet.
