ACUTE TO XIC ITY TO AQUATIC INVERTEBRATES (DAPHNIA MAGNA)
TEST SUBSTANCE_________________________________________
Identity: A mixture containing perfluorooctanesulfonate, which may also be referred to as PFOS, FC-95, or as a component of FX-3103. (1Octanesulfonic acid) (CAS # 2795-39-3).
Rem arks: The 3M production lot number was not noted. The test sample is FX-3103, 3%. Current information indicates it is a mixture of 0.96% PFOS, 20% diethylene glycol butyl ether, 50.56% water, 15% ethylene glycol, 4.32% sodium octyl sulfate, 6.0% polyoxyethylene monooctylphenyl ether, 2.5% propane sultone foamer, 0.5% sodium nitrate, 0.06% sodium lauryl sulfate, and 0.1% benzotriazole.
The following summary applies to a mixture with incompletely characterized concentrations o f impurities. Data may not accurately reflect the toxicity o f the fluorochemical component o f the test sample.
METHOD:________________________________________________________
M ethod: Not given. Type: Static acute GLP: No Y ear com pleted: 1985 Species: Daphniamagna Supplier: In-house cultures. Originally obtained from U.S. EPA-ERL, Duluth, MN. A nalytical m onitoring: Temperature, pH, and dissolved oxygen. Exposure period: 48-hours T est organism age: <24 hours old Statistical m ethods: EC50 values calculated using logistic regression methods (probit analysis). Test conditions:
Dilution w ater: Carbon-filtered well water. Dilution w ater chem istry: Not given.
Lighting: Not given. Stock and test solution preparation: A primary stock solution was prepared by dissolving 1000 mg of test substance in 500 mL water. Exposure concentrations were prepared by addition of stock solution to each vessel. Exposure vessels: 250 mL glass beakers containing 200 mL exposure " solution at a depth of 6 cm. Num ber o f replicates: 2 Num ber o f daphnids per replicate: 10 Num ber o f concentrations: five plus a blank control W ater chem istry during the study:

Elem ent values: 48-hour EC50 - >1000 mg/L Element values based on nominal concentrations. Rem arks: Testing was conducted on a mixture as described in the Test Substance rRmarks field. The values reported apply to that mixture and not the fluorochemical proportion alone. C O N C L U S IO N S ___________________________________________________ The test substance 48-hour EC50 was determined to be >1000 mg/L. Subm itter: 3M Company, Environmental Laboratory, P.O. Box 33331, St. Paul, Minnesota, 55133 DATA QUALITY__________________________________ _________________ Reliability: Klimisch ranking = 3. Study lacks description and records of method followed. The study lacks information on purity of the test substance and analytical confirmation of the amount of fluorochemical proportion in solution.
