Sen. Chuck Grassley is working to arrange a meeting with EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt at the behest of President Donald Trump to discuss the Renewable Fuel Standard, according to a Grassley spokeswoman.
The Iowa Republican spoke with Trump on Friday about the program, Grassley Spokeswoman Jill Gerber told POLITICO.
"President Trump has asked Administrator Pruitt to meet with Sen. Grassley to discuss the issue and we are working on scheduling a meeting," Gerber said in an email.
Grassley has been on the warpath over last week's EPA notice suggesting it may use waiver authority to cut the amount of biomass-based biodiesel that would be required to blend into the nation's fuel system in 2018, a year that was already finalized. The agency also asked for comment on setting biodiesel volumes as low as the legal minimum of 1 billion gallons for 2019, a steep reduction from the 2.1 billion gallons proposed in July.
Grassley issued a blistering statement and tweeted, "Trump promised 2b pro biofuels & pro rural America/Pruitt RFS proposal =anti biofuels &anti rural America / EPA not doing what @POTUS said." Biodiesel and ethanol producers also slammed the notice.
EPA spokeswoman Liz Bowman said Pruitt "has spoken with Senator Grassley about RFS at length" and that the two "will continue to work together on this issue going forward."
WHAT'S NEXT: EPA will soon publish the biomass-based biodiesel notice in the Federal Register, opening a 15-day comment period.
