Brown and C. (or 0.) L* Freeman, th a t he found these men w ith symptoms of lead absorption* l I would lik e to emphasize the imperative need of your not allowing any of these men under any circumstances to work with or immediately around the mixing equipment, or any of the fluid ss& no matter where i t is located - t h a t is to say, they should not handle or come in contact with any equipment or containers th a t 'cave had Ethyl flu id In them. I t is advisable when men have the symptoms of these men, to see to i t that they are e n tire ly disconnected from any pssible contamination e ith e r by breatMng the vapor or having any of the fluid corns in Contact with th e ir persons* Also, i t is important th at these men should spend as muchtime out of doors as possible. Of course, it is not a good plan to frig h ten them but would lik e to suggest that you so arrange for th e ir work as to afford them as much opportunity as possible to get back to normal* Ur. K itzm iller advises me th a t he understands these men are those who have been working with the small pump which Ms been in stalled for a long time and wMch has apparently been leaking in various places, We have issued s tr ic t instructions to our inspectors to correct any leaks that they might find, and also have urged our customers not to permit th e ir men to woik on pumps which were leaking. TMs is one of the most stringent rules which our nodical Department has put out because our experience has been su ffi-- cient to ju s tify us in the b e lie f that one of the worst things th at can happen to one of the men working with the flu id , i s the b e lie f on Ms pari- that be cause he has not f e lt any harmful effects that he can more or less ignore the fact th at the vapors and skin contact m y produce dangerous resu lts i f breathed or absorbed _In appreciable quantities* so I cannot tod strongly urge th a t th is : matter should receive atten tio n , and I sincerely hope th at you w ill not construe these suggestions as impertinent or an attempt to in te rfer with the operation of your business* I t is being dbne because of the extreme importance of prompt action in the protection of these men. I f put on other work, p articu larly on . the outside, there i s no reason why they should not readily he restored to a condition that w ill not show any symptoms*
