ENGINEERING ASBESTOS SURVEY NO. 1
Attached please find the results of a survey conducted in Room 130, Building #1 of the Wayne complex on October 10, 1978. The object of this survey was to determine if asbestos was present in the white dust accumulating on the shoes and pants cuffs of several employees in this laboratory.
Some of the dust scraped from shoes and the floor was examined under a phase contrast microscope. This technique showed asbestos fibers to be present. Photographs are attached to show these fibers. The presence of asbestos fibers can be expected as .the tile in this room has been tentatively identified as Armstrong vinyl-asbestos tile containing 15-18% asbestos. Normally the asbestos is bound. However, in this case it appears that chemicals have been spilled on the floor causing some deterioration of the tiles.
In addition to the above,airborne samples were collected three to four feet above the floor in three locations of heavy foot traffic. Two of these samples gave "zero" results while one showed one fiber which equates to 0.003 fibers/ cc, which is well below the 2.0 fibers/cc standard.
