Dear Mr. Taylor: Thanks for your letter of May 27 with the attached letter from Mr. Newton of Sterling Oil. This is one of those difficult situations in which one may create difficulties by intervention. The facts as to what happened to Mr. Donald Kuntz are by no means clear. Whether he was overcome by carbon monoxide or by gasoline vapors, or whether he had some type of circulatory collapse, is not apparent, because of the ambiguity of the statements attributed to the doctor. I would suggest that you or one of your associates might make discreet inquiry into this situation through sources that will not give rise to any misunderstanding, in order that we may learn the facts somewhat more clearly, and so that we may not be caught unawares in subsequent litigation. I should be very glad to communicate with the doctor in this case if the information justifies it, but I am afraid I cannot do so unless there is better reason for it than appears at present.
