INDUSTRIAL HYCIENE SURVEY, MCCOOK PLANT
At the request of plant management, an Industrial Hygiene survey was conducted at the McCook Sheet & Plate Plant, during August and September 1982. Following are the results of that survey:
1) OIL MIST - Personal samples for airborne oil mist vere collected for job categories associated with hot rolling, cold rolling, plate rolling, and plate finishing. Samples are generally less than 20 percent of the OSHA standard and indicate compliance in all areas.
2) NOISE - Sound level measurements vere made throughout the plant, using a conventional sound level meter. Follow-up measurements vere made, using 80 and 90 dBA personal audiodosimeters, to determine full-shift exposures. Results indicate that a Mandatory Bearing Conservation Program is required for the following areas:
Hot Rolling Department - Mandatory hearing protection required for all jobs associated with the 80" mill and the 1-1/2" shear. All other em ployees associated with hot rolling, such S6 the 6" shear, the scalper, the baler, the ingot stacker, the bandstand, and the crane operator, require inclusion in your Hearing Conservation Program (i.e. annual monitoring and audiograms).
Cold Rolling Department - Mandatory hearing protection is required for the #1 mill operator and the assistant and the #7 mill, A and B operators. All other employees should be included in your Hearing Conservation Program.
Plate Finishing - Mandatory hearing protection is required for the Rust furnace exit operator, with all other employees being included in your Hearing Conservation Program.
Cast House, Plate Rolling, Strip Processing, Heat Treat, Skin Mill, Finishing - All employees in these departments are to be included under the Hearing Conservation Program.
3) CASTBOUSS - NUISANCE DUST - METALS - Personal samples for total airborne dust (nuisance dust), aluminum, lead, and beryllium vere collected throughout the casthouse. Both nuisance dust and trace levels are veil below OSHA guidelines.
