E m ergency Overview Health I la/.ards Identification and Emergency Overview Under normal conditions o f use, this product is not expected to create any unusual emergency hazards. This product is N O T flammable, N O T reactive, N O T explosive, has N O flashpoint, and poses N O special hazards in the presence o f fire. Potential H ealth Effects from Acute and Chronic Occupational Exposures to Talc TARGET ORGANS Inhalation Sirin C ontact Eye Contact Ingestion LUNGS, RESPIRATORY SYSTEM ACUTE: Exposure to a large concentration o f air-bom dust o f this material may cause mechanical irritation o f the mucous membranes and respiratory tract. CHRONIC: Repeated o r prolonged inhalation o f air-bom dust o f this material may cause scarring o f the lungs (pulmonary fibrosis), with shortness o f breath, chronic cough, and respiratory assisted heart failure. Prolonged exposure to talc can produce symptomatic talc pneumoconiosis (talcosis). ACUTE: Direct contact may cause dryness, or may cause mild irritation if an allergic predisposition exists. Cl IRONIC: Prolonged contact may cause dryness o f the skin, or may cause mild irritation if an allergic pre-disposition exists ACUTE: Direct contact with dust may cause mechanical irritation o f the eyes. CHRONIC: Repeated exposure may cause conjunclivae inflammation. ACUTE: This material is considered to be harmless and inert when ingested. CHRONIC: Repeated ingestion o f large doses o f talc for 13 and 10 successive days by rabbits and mice revealed negative teratogenic and carcinogenic results. H andling & Storage Accidental Release Measures Use vacuum to clean up spillage. Place in sealed container. For large spills, shovel or sweep up (while keeping dispersion o f dust in air to a minimum) and place into suitable sealed containers for reclamation o r later disposal Residue should be cleaned up using a highefficiency particulate filter vacuum. The use o f water wash-down is not recommended. Wet material can cause a surface used for walking to become extremely slippery. Talc is not considered a hazardous waste by RCRA criteria (40 CFR 261). dandling and Storas Handle in ways to minimize the creation o f dust. Preserve product in sealed containers. Section 8. Personal Protection Exposure Controls & Personal Protection Use NIO SH approved dust respirator. Use safety glasses or dust tight goggles. No special skin protection is usually required, but gloves should be worn by workers susceptible to skin irritation. j | Controls Dust Respirator Safety Glasses Gloves Provide local exhaust or process enclosure ventilation to meet published exposure limits (TLV).
